Tynemouth Outdoor Pool Renovation

Jesus Green Pool is one of the few survivors of the lidos built in the UK during the 1920s. Tynemouth Outdoor Pool – like many others – fell into disuse in the 1990s. Today it’s a sad and crumbling rockpool. Now, a charity is raising funds to see it renovated. They’ve launched a community shares offer and so far attracted pledges of more than £300,000. You can help ensure that Tynemouth gets the kind of pool that makes us all love our summers in Cambridge! You can register your interest, find out more, or just spread the word here:

Swim the Cam 2017 – call for volunteer organisers!

Swim the Cam 2017 – call for volunteer organisers!

The team behind last year’s ‘Swim the Cam’ event are looking for volunteers to help organise another ‘Swim the Cam’ for summer 2017. ‘Swim the Cam’ is a sponsored 3.8km swim in the River Cam from Byron’s Pool to Sheep’s Green. Primarily it is to raise money and awareness for the Cambridge Sustainable Food Hub project, but participants are welcome to raise sponsorship for a cause or charity of their own choice as well. 23 swimmers participated in last year’s swim, and the finish line event was attended by the mayor of Cambridge, Jeremy Benstead.

If you’re keen to volunteer, please email Duncan Catchpole, duncan@cofco.co.uk

Autumn Sea Swim – Felixstowe 9th October

Change of Location
Following feedback on trips to Dunwich in recent years we decided to suggest Felixstowe instead of Dunwich for 2016.

We felt that the benefits were:

  • Relatively safer swimming at all states of the tide
  • Easier, quicker access by car from Cambridge with easy parking
  • Accessible by public transport from Cambridge
  • Numerous cafes for lunch and afternoon cakes
  • Plenty of shelter if needed
  • Possibly a beach hut as a base – thanks to Seamus

Trip Report
On Sunday 9th October, in a break with tradition, we visited Felixstowe for our annual Autumn swim in the sea.
The day proved to be a great success and started well with bright sunshine although there was a heavy rain shower just as most of were changing after swimming – never mind, the sun soon reappeared and some even returned to the sea later in the day!

The result was a very enjoyable day out, with around 27 people attending and many positive comments.

Thanks for joining us and here’s to next year!

Jesus Green Pool ‘working party’ and pre-season event

Hello,

helendwyerMy name is Helen and I am the Assistant Manager at Jesus Green Lido this year.

Pre-season preparation and refurbishments are well under way and looking great. I am really excited about this season.

This year we thought it would be a nice idea to have a ‘working party’ in preparation for the season ahead. We would like to invite you down to the Lido on Tuesday 10th May to help with the final touches to the lido. These things may include sweeping, touching up some paint work, weeding, window cleaning…the smaller details that will make a huge difference to the overall feel to the Lido. For anyone who would like to help out, we will open the doors at 10am. We will have spring cleaning from 10am to 2pm followed by opening up the lido for anyone who has contributed and would like a fresh swim from 2-3pm. Please let me know if you are interested in getting involved.

We will have some brushes, tools and paint brushes, but anyone who has their own that they could bring with them, it would be really appreciated.

I would also like to invite you down to the Lido on Friday the 13th of May for the pre-opening event. We will be opening the pool between 17.30 and 18.30 for anyone who would like a swim. There will be complimentary food and drink available from our newly refurbished café. We hope that you can all make this event.

I look forward to meeting you all and to a great season.

Kind regards,
Helen Dwyer
Assistant Manager
