23 February meeting notes

JG Pool meeting

23rd February 2016 @ Hobbs Pavilion

Brief notes based on the agenda: –

Present:    Daryl Emes – Better/GLL Partnership Manager, Todd Baxter – Better/GLL General Manager, Ian Ross – Cambridge City Council and around 25 ‘friends’ of Jesus Green Pool

1    Men’s showers – variable water temperature seen as related to pressure variability and the Houseboat discharge facility adjoining the Men’s shower block –  being investigated.

2    Ladies Showers & drainage – drains being cleared of roots (as they are every year)

3    Men’s toilets smell from houseboat discharge – essentially a design problem with the interconnected drains. Being investigated but probably little prospect of any immediate fix.

4    Cleanliness of showers & toilets – request from those present for better monitoring by pool staff

5    Pool water quality – much discussion about occasional poor water quality. Usually occurs during busy periods when the filter pumps struggle to cope with the volume of water – not thought to be related to sun cream usage.

6    Lane etiquette – Ensure that lane/direction boards are placed (& fixed) at both ends of the pool – request for pool staff to monitor problems and take action when necessary.

7    Staffing & lane closures – aim is to keep open the whole pool at all times. Suggestion that Triathlete swimmers should be restricted to their own lane when possible.

8    Opening times – Times are expected to follow last years schedules with additional extended opening times unlikely (although a special occasion late opening will be looked into eg. mid-summer day?)

9    Cafe provision – Cafe will be run in-house by Better/GLL with a limited offer of drinks and snacks. Note – A Catering Manager has been appointed at Parkside and will be responsible for Jesus Green.

Other items:

  • There was a general acknowledgement by those present that GLL have improved the running of the pool and were thanked for their efforts.
  • Summer 2016 opening date: Saturday 14th May (also a brief opening evening of Friday 13th May)
  • Trees – there is a long term plan to remove all the the Lelandi and replace with alternative trees.

Post meeting note – The new Catering Manager, Maurizio Cavaliere has been in touch and is keen to promote the new cafe at Jesus Green Pool.

Jesus Green Pool sauna finally gets switched on.

barrel sauna

Jesus Green Pool sauna

With 38 days left in the current season, today marked the  inauguration of the sauna, proudly standing where the original cafe once stood. Today was a day of free entry. The sauna is now enclosed in it’s own area with wooden palings and has it’s own little gate.

Better have decided to charge, swimming season ticket holders an extra £2 for a twenty minute session identified with a rubber band, it’s unclear to me how will this will work in practice, unless a ‘lifeguard’ gets stationed at the picket fence. Day swimmers can get a swim+sauna ticket for £6.50 or maybe it’s going to be £6.80 🙂

It’s an interesting idea, time will tell if it gets used, it’s already been vandalised once by the night raiders so doesn’t bode to well 🙁

Dunwich Trip – Provisionally Sunday 11th October

Traditionally the Friends of Jesus Green Pool have made an end of season trip to Dunwich for a sea swim, fish and chips and a beach walk.  This is usually on the second Sunday of October – Oct. 11th this year.

Date and details to be confirmed – look out for posters at the pool.  An email will be sent for those on the list – you can sign up for the list in the panel to the right of this message.

A very sad green Jesus Green Pool

Timehop now and a year ago The pool is currently suffering terribly due to the breakdown of its filtration pumps (now fixed apparently) after a very busy sunny weekend.

Today Better roped of the deep centre portion leaving two 40 yard sections at each end. The deep water was so cloudy they couldn’t see their test manequin on the pool bottom 🙁

You can see the difference in my comparison picture from a year ago. Tomorrow Friday 24th July it might be best to call them 01223 302579 to check the situation before going.

The pool is also suffering it’s annual problems with the hot showers. This year its the turn of the ladies to have a cold one!

Maybe instead of installing a sauna, which apparently should be operational ‘soon’ the money could have been better spent on refurbishing the showers and pump room!
